Frederick Douglass Humanitarian Scholarship

Scholarship Overview:

The Frederick Douglass Humanitarian Scholarship, sponsored by Eta Theta Lambda of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., recognizes Black or Latino male high school seniors from the Greater Long Island or Greater New York City Area. This scholarship honors students who have shown exceptional dedication to community service and have made a significant impact in their communities, embodying the humanitarian spirit of Frederick Douglass.


Scholarship Award:

The recipient will receive a $2000 scholarship to aid their education at a four-year college or university.


Eligibility Criteria:

  • Ethnicity/Gender: Open to Black or Latino male students.

  • Academic Achievement: Minimum 80% average/3.0 GPA.

  • Geographical Restriction: Must be a resident of the Greater Long Island or Greater New York City Area.

  • Community Service and Impact: Demonstrated significant contribution and impact through community service.


Application Requirements:

  • Resume Submission: A resume showcasing your community service involvement, leadership roles, and other achievements.

  • Essay Submission: Write a minimum 500-word essay on the topic: "How have you made a significant impact in your community through service, and why is community service important to you?" The essay should include details about your personal motivation, specific community service activities, the impact of these activities, and your vision for future community involvement.

  • Letters of Recommendation and Evidence of Impact: At least two letters of recommendation from community leaders, educators, or mentors, along with tangible evidence of your community impact, such as testimonials, media articles, or certificates.

  • Name Community Service Hours & Location: Provide letter(s) from community service places that list your hours and service. 


Application Timeline:

  • Application Launch Date: January 9th

  • Application Deadline: April 1st

Selection and Celebration:

  • Winner Announcement: The recipient will be announced in May.

  • Celebration Event: An in-person celebration in late May/June in Long Island (details to be provided later). Attendance by the scholarship recipient is mandatory.
