Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Leadership Scholarship

Scholarship Overview:

The MLK Leadership Scholarship, proudly offered Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Eta Theta Lambda Chapter is dedicated to acknowledging and supporting Black or Latino male high school seniors from the Greater Long Island or Greater New York City Area. This scholarship honors students who have exemplified outstanding leadership both within their schools and in their broader communities, embodying the leadership qualities championed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.


Scholarship Award:

The scholarship grants a $2000 award to a student who has shown exemplary leadership.


Eligibility Criteria:

  • Ethnicity/Gender: Open to Black or Latino male students.

  • Academic Achievement: Minimum 80% average/3.0 GPA.

  • Geographical Restriction: Residents of the Greater Long Island or Greater New York City Area.

  • Leadership Demonstration: Proven leadership experience both in school and in the community.


Application Requirements:

  • Resume Submission: A current resume showcasing leadership roles, achievements, and involvements both in school and in the community.

  • Essay Submission: A minimum 500-word essay on the topic: "How have you demonstrated leadership in your school and community, and what has this taught you about the principles and responsibilities of leadership?" The essay should detail specific leadership roles, initiatives led, and the impact of these efforts.

    • Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required:

    • One from a School Leader: Such as a teacher, principal, or school counselor, highlighting your leadership within the school.

    • One from a Community Leader: Such as a community organizer, local business leader, or head of a community group, illustrating your leadership in the community.

  • Proof of Leadership: Provide evidence of your leadership roles, such as articles, awards, certificates, speeches, or other relevant documents that demonstrate your leadership qualities and achievements.


Application Timeline:

  • Application Launch Date: January 9th

  • Application Deadline: April 1st


Selection and Celebration:

  • Winner Announcement: The scholarship recipient will be announced in May.

  • Celebration Event: An in-person event in late May/June in Long Island (further details to be announced). Attendance by the scholarship recipient is mandatory.
