Thurgood Marshall Scholarship

Scholarship Overview:

The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship, sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Eta Theta Lambda Chapter, is designed to honor and support Black or Latino male high school seniors from the Greater Long Island or Greater New York City Area. This scholarship recognizes students who embody Thurgood Marshall's legacy through their commitment to community service and leadership in various settings.


Scholarship Award:

A $2000 award will be granted to the scholarship recipient to assist with their academic journey.


Eligibility Criteria:

  • Ethnicity/Gender: Open to Black or Latino male students.

  • Academic Achievement: Must have a minimum 80% average/3.0 GPA.

  • Geographical Restriction: Residents of the Greater Long Island or Greater New York City Area.

  • Community Service and Leadership: Demonstrated participation in community service and leadership within their school and community.


Application Requirements:

  • Resume Submission: Include a resume detailing community service involvements and leadership roles.

    • Community Service Hours & Location Documentation:

    • Provide letters from organizations where you completed community service. These letters should outline the number of hours served and the nature of the service.

    • Letters of Recommendation: Two letters are required:

    • One from a School Leader: Highlighting your leadership and contributions within the school environment.

    • One from a Community Leader: Reflecting your involvement and impact in community service.

  • Proof of Leadership and Service: Present any certificates, awards, or additional documentation of community service and leadership roles.

  • Essay Submission: (Optional) A 500-word essay on "How have your leadership and community service experiences influenced your goals and aspirations?"


Application Timeline:

  • Application Launch Date: January 9th

  • Application Deadline: April 1st

Selection and Celebration:

  • Winner Announcement: In May.

  • Celebration Event: A celebration event in late May/June in Long Island (exact details to be announced). Scholarship recipient's attendance is mandatory.
